...that I watched in 2023. Some spoilers. I watched too many mid/bad movies this year, but at least it made
me appreciate
the great ones more.
10. Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (2023)
Fantastic production quality and intriguing storyline. Some parts feel rushed but still
quite enjoyable,
particularly some of the Chinese themes.
9. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Watched this on a day off and felt better about being sick lying in bed.
8. The Menu (2022)
Another rare horror movie that I like. The dishes looks amazing, at least the first few
courses.
It did make me a bit more self-conscious about taking food pictures though.
7. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
Fire.
6. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Only slightly cheesy at times and mostly gripping & action-packed. The format is great for
giving flashbacks of important moments,
which are sometimes hilarious and often heartbreaking.
5. Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
Classic and bittersweet, especially seeing it's based on a true story. Great acting by the
dog though.
4. Oppenheimer (2023)
Star-studded, crazy production, and provocative. I wish it was a little less bloated and
unscrambled at times, but it does give you time to think.
Power and control are finnicky. It's hard to step back and see your role in the bigger
picture when you're caught up in the moment.
3. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
The Boy and the Heron was great too but it took me a while to start getting it & for a lot
of elements to be introduced.
Totoro is comparitively less ambitious in the best way: I loved the beauty and simplicity,
and the characters are all perfect.
2. Barbie (2023)
Well-made all around. Fun plot, relevant & timely jokes, and banger music.
1. Past Lives (2023)
Simple yet poignant. The themes of immigrating and juggling multiple parts of your personality resonated with me,
as well as appreciating the moments of the past while making the tough but right decision for the future.
